The United Sates is living in a time of argument. It seems as though all citizens are arguing about one thing or another. With so much controversy going on there is a large number of people turning their anger and frustration towards our constitution; calling it old and outdated and things of that nature. Yet the problem lies not within the Constitution. The vast majority of the Constitution works and remains true and useful in modern society. That is not to say every article I rock solid. One thing that should be changed within the constitution is altering the 2nd Amendment so states are not allowed to impress more than a certain amount of gun control on their citizens.

If the Constitution were slightly altered so that states couldn’t regulate guns as much, then guns would be put in the hands of responsible citizens therefore counteracting the guns used by the thugs and criminals. For example, Chicago (and Illinois in general) has some of the strictest gun laws in the United States. In 1982 Chicago issued a hand gun ban making it illegal for any citizen to own a handgun. After the ban was put into effect the number of homicides with handguns increased by 40%. In 2010, the Supreme Court decided that the handgun ban was unconstitutional and made the city of Chicago repeal the ban. This caused the overall murder rate to drop by 17%. Here’s another example. On October 1, 1987 Florida instituted a right-to-carry act meaning that citizens could carry guns concealed for self-protection. The state required that to get a concealed carry license a person had to be 21 years old, have a clean criminal record, and complete a firearms safety course. Since the act went into effect the murder rate has averaged 36% lower than before citizens had guns. So to say more guns equals more safety is a fair
