Hate Crimes Hate Crime is defined by congress as an “ criminal offense against a person or property motivated in whole or in part by an offenders bias against a race, religion, disability, ethnic or sexual orientation” (FBI, 2010). Many Americans still today are victims of hate crimes or call bias crimes. Bias Crime has been a big problem in the United States. “We cannot outlaw hate, but laws shape attitudes. Hate should be re recognized and opposed in all its form.” The article I read was very hurtful because it was a very hateful thing to do in general. A student from the University of Mississippi was hateful on school property by placing a confederate flag symbol on a statue. The statue located in University of Mississippi is of James Meredith, “ he first African-American student to attend the Ole Miss” (Workneh, 2015). The student of Ole Miss was charge for two civil charges for his bias and hate behavior. I thank the civil rights leaders and the people that made a change. That fought for all of us that come from different background and origins. They were the stepping-stones that open doors for us minorities to have better educational and living style. Also to be able attending schools and colleges that segregated black and whites. I find it shocking that still today we still see this form of hate crime. Our civil rights heroes lost their lives for fighting for equality.
