There are many citizens out in the world and each one has a purpose in life whether they approve or disapprove, but it is worse having it stolen from you and not being compensated or receiving recognition for the contribution made for a better future. Henrietta Lacks was an African American woman with cervical cancer and while undergoing radioactive therapy, she has her cells stolen from her. She died not knowing the truth and numerous years later, her family is shocked to find out the truth. The knowledge acquired by reading this enthralling novel is how the medical procedures were conducted during the time period of when Henrietta Lacks was undergoing medical attention for her tumor. I learned about how this whole operation was secret and that it was not even revealed that the cells were Henrietta Lack’s after many years. Not only did I learn about Henrietta’s cells and how it grows in an exceeding rate, but the background of author and why she wanted to indulge herself into the story of Henrietta Lack’s and uncover the truth behind this scientific phenomenon. I have opened this novel with an open mind towards what I would learn and expect from the story held within. I came into Biology eager to learn, but have no idea what we will learn this year, so there were no misconceptions or preconceptions. At the very least it gave me a background to start the year off with and have a general idea of where the year will go in learning. Becoming educated and learning new information gives me more of a support to base my year off of it, but I encourage myself to be open minded and challenge myself with anything thrown my way. Learning about such a phenomenon not only fascinates me in the science behind finding cures for diseases and medicine, but also remind me of the simple lessons in life such as it is a wrong doing to ever take someone else’s property without permission and not even giving credit. This book has given an extension to my understanding of biology and I cannot wait to learn
