The townspeople made Hester Prynne wear the Scarlet Letter as a symbol of her sin for her to remember everyday. I was asked to wear a letter of my own choice that represented a flaw or characteristic. My experience was somewhat similar to Hester because we both recognized our flaws. We didn’t try to hide the truth. I didn’t try to hide my flaw that I expressed through my letter, but rather embrace it. I recognized that I can work on this flaw and change it. In the beginning of the novel, Hester’s letter symbolized “adulterer.” However, Hester changed the meaning of the letter through her good deeds. The letter was recognized as meaning “able.” The effect this letter has on the novel shows the theme of redemption. Hester came back from the negative things said about her and changed it. She proves how her good actions spoke louder then the letter on her dress. My letter stood for “high-strung,” and this means nervous and stressed. My friends saw the emoji’s on the letter and knew it had something to do with nervousness. Only one of my friends figured out what the letter meant. Often during the day, I would forget I was wearing the letter until people started staring at me. I was surprised to see how a lot of my classmates didn’t want to show their flaws, but positive characteristics about them.
