Huey Long was a prominent politician during the early 1900s, during his political carrier Long was known for his reformation of government policies and his programs that he implemented that improved the lives of citizens in Louisiana. One of the changes Long made during his term as Governor was to change the Tax System in Louisiana. The changes made by Long helped shift the burden of taxes off of lower class citizens to the rich and large corporations. This idea to redistribute wealth in American Society was not Long’s only attempt. On February 23, 1934 Long addressed the country through a radio show to convey his ideas for the reformation of american wealth distribution. During the period of time that Long gave this speech the average family wealth was around $16,000. This meant that every American family would own a home that was valued at no less than $5,000. Though the average American family’s income has nearly quadrupled since Long’s proposals this policy could still help American families that fall below the average family income. Those who make less than that average income would still have a home that was valued no less than one third than the average income. This could help with the homeless population problem in America. Long’s second proposal aimed at limiting the amount of money families could own. Long stated that no family should own more than three hundred times the average annual family income.
