--- --- In the heart of hurricane season, the southwestern United States has taken some tough hits from storms such as Harvey, Jose, Irma, and most recently Maria. At times where these storms seem to tear everyone apart, we know it really brings us all together, and Walmart wants to show that. Walmart’s most recent advertisement, “Better Together”, takes us into the devastation of Hurricane Harvey and tugs at our heartstrings. As a series of photos are displayed with the intro to Bill Withers’ Lean on me playing, Walmart displays a message stating they will double all donations made in their stores to help Hurricane Harvey victims. With at least 82 dead and the entire Texas coast ravaged, Hurricane Harvey has proven to be one of the most impactful hurricanes ever. As more data is reported, it is estimated that Harvey could be the most expensive Hurricane in U.S. history, coming in at $190 Billion. This advertisement will not make me call and donate right away, but it will cause me to donate the next time I go shopping. This is because Walmart advertises through mass media outlets that every one of their stores will be accepting donations. Walmart continues to reinforce the norm that Americans help Americans in a time of need. Through this advertisement, Walmart’s goal is for Americans to feel the need to nurture other Americans. Walmart is not advertising any special deals or promotions, but they are expressing the idea that they will always be there for you. This is more important because as a consumer, I would rather go to a store that cares about me than a cold-hearted big business. Although Walmart is the largest company in the world, this advertisement makes them feel like a small business.
