Prosecutors have reported charges Thursday in the lethal shooting of Kansas City, Kansas, police Capt. Dave Melton.

Jamaal Lewis has been accused of capital homicide for the situation. Police said they trust he is the individual who discharged the shot that killed Melton Tuesday evening.

DaQon Sipple has been accused of disturbed strike, irritated ambush on a law authorization officer and criminal release of a weapon regarding gunfire at the Juniper Gardens loft complex. Agents said Sipple started up to eight shots.

He was taken into guardianship at that scene almost 20 minutes before Melton was shot at 22nd Street and Haskell Avenue.

Sipple's safeguard was set at $100,000. Prosecutors said there's a purpose for the diverse level of charges.

"In this circumstance, Sipple was taken into guardianship 19 minutes before Capt. Melton was shot," said Wyandotte County District Attorney Jerome Gorman. "With the goal Sipple should be subject for the demise or the activities of Lewis, we would need to demonstrate that he recognized what Lewis was going to do."

Prosecutors said they would choose at a later time whether to look for capital punishment against Lewis since they need to talk about it with Melton's family. A conviction on a capital homicide accusation can, by law, just result in a capital punishment or life in jail. Lewis had no earlier criminal record.
