History is filled with women who were instrumental in creating change or standing up for their beliefs. Many of the most memorable events in history are associated with women who made contributions in one way or another to the events that would change their situations. Three of these women include Jane Addams, Sarah and Angelina Grimke, and Harriet Tubman. Each of these women come from extremely different backgrounds and participated in history in very different ways. However, the one thing they all have in common is that the contributions that they each made to society changed their lives and the lives of many people around them and in the future. Along with writing, Addams lectured at many universities and taught classes at the University of Chicago, where Hull House was located (Alonso, 6). In 1898, Addams joined the Anti-Imperialist League (Alonso, 6). Politically, Addams was active in the Progressive party and helped in Theodore Roosevelt’s 1912 campaign for president (Alonso, 6). In addition to this work, she was an active proponent of war, writing books and lecturing as well as teaching classes about bringing peace to the world. Addams also publically decried the entry of the United States into the First World War and was expelled from her membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution for her stance (Elshtain). However, she went on to serve as an assistant to President Herbert Hoover during World War I with the purpose of providing food and supplies to innocent women and children of enemy nations
