History has had many leaders, some more effective than others. A true leader can be defined in many ways, but universally, a true leader is someone who “fosters strong relationships with individuals to achieve organizational goals.” In William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, a group of boys crashed on a deserted island with little to no supplies and a low chance of rescue. In an effort to maintain civilization, two possible leaders, Jack and Ralph emerged. In the battle between life and death, these two boys fight for their appearance as leaders, one fighting for rescue, while the other is fighting for survival. During their first group meeting, Ralph addresses that the group needs to “make smoke on top of the mountain; we need to make fire” if a “ship comes near the island.” This indicates that by making a fire, the boys can alert any incoming ships at sea of the boy’s presence on the island. Furthermore, Ralph was able to maintain peace throughout the island, and keep violence as far as possible. As once said by Ralph Waldo Emerson, “peace cannot be achieved through violence, it can only be attained through understanding.” Since Ralph understands the situation the boys’ are going through on the island, he is able to maintain peace and make sure that nobody gets into any fights by making rules that must be followed by all members of the tribe. When Jack says, “We’re strong, we hunt. If there’s a beast, we’ll hunt it down.” Instead of focusing so much on keeping the fire going, Jack pays more attention to hunting for meat, so the boys can eat. Although this can benefit the boy's hunger, it is not mandatory for the boys to eat meat, since they have access to fruit that can fulfill their hunger. Not paying attention to the fire delays the time that the boys get rescued off the island. Furthermore, Jack acts as if he is a dictator, and makes up rules that benefit him. While on the top of the mountain, “the conch doesn’t count on top of the mountain,” “ so you shut up Piggy.” Since Jack doesn’t like the way Piggy is being in power, he tells Piggy to ‘shut up’ since the conch doesn’t count on top of the mountain, whereas the boys talked about the conch being applied everywhere on the island.
