Making College More Affordable for Everyone Imagine a student at a very expensive college, paid for by their parents, who never attends class, has an F average, parties all the time, and most likely will not graduate. Now imagine a person from a lower income family, who has the will to become a doctor and is caring, has amazing attention to detail, has memorized countless books of information on the subject, and would most likely be a great doctor, but cannot afford the tuition required to attend. How different the world would be if colleges were compensated for the number of qualified graduates produced, rather than the current method of students paying to participate, but unfortunately this is not the case. Making college more affordable for everyone, would allow a greater number of students, graduates, and a stronger workforce. Why not have free college for all those who wish to attend? The current system in place may pay your tuition, but for most the loan repayments place the graduates into a form of servitude and poverty for years after graduation, and this is assuming that a quality job is available to help with the expense. Aaron Smith, co-founder and executive director of Young Invincibles, a forum for youth finances claims “Reforming our financial aid system changes incentives for students, families and schools, and can, if done right, put us on a path to a more successful higher education system. If reform is done wrong -- without student input, for example -- it could hurt the very students we are trying to help.” Reforms to grant and loan programs need to ensure college is accessible to everyone, particularly low-income students and those from communities with historically low enrollment and completion
