Have you ever been “good as gold” or “green with envy”? In MALEFICENT, a movie produced by Disney Studios in 2014, none of traditional character roles are followed. Instead it uses an infamous villain who is troubled by mixed emotions. Focusing on how there is good and evil in everyone and that nothing last forever, it takes viewers on a tumultuous, rollercoaster ride. Throughout the movie the director shows how Maleficent changes from good to evil and back again with different sound effects, set lighting and the color changes. Sound can express different moods and feelings; music particularly uses rhythm and melody of the music to show this. The color of her, magic changes from gold to green as she turns from good to evil. Gold, indicating love, passion, and courage, while Green having a toxic color shows jealousy, greed, and ambition. The director wanting to show that Maleficent still had good inside of her. Even after her heart had been broken and evil took over her mind, she continued to heal plants. Whenever she used her healing magic for good deeds like curing or healing the plants For example, where Maleficent noticed a broken tree branch, still having good inside of her, with gold-colored magic fixed the branch back to normal. However, whenever she used her magic for bad the color of her magic turns green. Although, when she was cursing Aurora, green magic would come out but you could see a glimpse of gold. Indicating that Maleficent still had good spirit inside of her. Even the color of her outfit changes from earthly brown color indicating elegance, natural, warmth and healing to black. Black being a dark color that shows nothing proves that she has turn mysterious, sadness and conservative. Just by looking at the colors of her magic and outfits we can assume that Maleficent was good or evil. The director uses different motifs to explain his ideology in his movie.
