March is a book by John Lewis about the Civil Rights Movement and all the events that happened during it. The book talks about the harsh treatment of African-Americans at the time and all the hardships they faced back then. John Lewis showed his perseverance through his speech, action, and thoughts. In the beginning of the book, John Lewis stands with other civil rights activists during the Selma to Montgomery Marches. They get confronted by police, who tell them to turn around or have tear gas thrown at them. Instead of giving up, they decide to persevere and still continue the march. I feel like this showed perseverance strongly, and it was a very inspirational moment in the book. It shows the bravery of the civil rights activists during those protests. In the book, it says, "The universe is with us. Walk together, children. Don't get weary." (pages 120–21) I felt like this quote was very inspiring to the people in the book. They get arrested, beaten, and punished for their actions. Yet they never give up; they still continue to protest, sit in, and boycott restaurants that are treating them and other African Americans unfairly. On page 103, the book shows Lewis being arrested for the sit-ins that they participated in. On the page after it, it shows Lewis and his group in jail. They end up singing to pass the time, and their bail goes from $100 to $5 because the jail wants to get rid of them. At 11 p.m., they ended up being released anyway. In the book, on page 78, it says, "His words liberated me. I thought, This is it, This is the way out."
