New Mexico is home to as many as 19 Pueblo tribes in total. They are split throughout the various regions of the state; in the upper region there are the Eight Northern Pueblo tribes which include the Taos, Picuris, Santa Clara, Ohkay abd many other tribes. Then there are many Pueblos in the south region of New Mexico which is where you will find the Acoma, Cochiti, San Felipe, Santa Clara and the tribe I chose to focus on, the Santa Ana Pueblo. The list of Pueblo tribes in New Mexico goes on and on they span all over the entire state. The Santa Ana Pueblo have occupied their location in central New Mexico since at least the 1500's. They believed their ancestory came from a subterranean world to the north of their location. During their rituals masks, textiles and body painting are all very important parts of the ceremony. Traditional instruments that they use include gourd rattles, wooden drums and rawhides. These instruments can be very unique to the tribe since using a certain instrument can signify roles for leaders, singers, dancers or spectators. Many of the dances are performed by men of the tribe who will sing and dance in unison. The dances and songs relate to their way of life usually honoring seasonal change, hunting or gathering, or the song will be to bring rain to their crops. Some of the specific songs that I was able to find relating to them are the Corn dance (an example of a song/dance for crops) and also the Matachine dance which is in honor of the buffalo or deer.
