Obsessive compulsive disorder is 10th place ranked out of all of the diseases, both physically and mentally, that can cause disability. Reported by the World Health Organisation, in 2009. From the latest obsessive compulsive disorder statistics, some experts estimate that 1 to 3 percent of individuals in the population suffer from OCD and 1 in 200 children are born with the disorder. It has also been estimated that 34% of obsessive compulsive disorder patients diagnosed with the condition will be depressed at the time of diagnosis and 65% will soon develop depression over the time in their lives. In severe cases there are many antidepressant medications that can be used to treat OCD, such as clomipramine, fluoxetine, paroxetine, or sertraline. However, these medications do take 6-8 weeks to show or help with any improvement. The aim of that type of treatment is to cure the condition. Obsessive compulsive disorder, treatment doesn’t always have a cure, however it can help bring symptoms under control calmly, this is so they don’t ruin your life. All though, medications that can calm down the symptoms such as antidepressants, or in serious cases psychiatric medications can be used to help control the obsessions.
