Currently in society, the issue of copious pollution has been an ongoing problem that has only worsened with time. For the most part, the solution for Earth’s inhabitants has been to continue poisoning the planet, and let the future generations face the ramifications of the former’s negligence. However, the routine of mindlessly polluting the planet without much forethought to the future has caught up with society. Namely, in both the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean exists an immeasurable amount of waste that has been dumped into the water. Left alone this waste has dispersed all throughout the Oceans, killing many seabirds and aquatic life. According to a research study sponsored by Columbia University’s Earth Engineering Center, five garbage patches exist “in the North and South Pacific Ocean; North and South Atlantic Ocean; and Indian Ocean” (Sesini 4). Also, the estimated amount of waste altogether is “36,000 tons, unequally dispersed” between the North Atlantic with “9,064 tons,” the North Pacific with “20,240 tons,” and the other three areas as well …show more content…
Often, once the waste has washed on shore, it is left there and the pollution persists. The waste continues to affect marine life through creatures who dwell on the shore, seabirds, and the soil. International and local non-profit organizations however, greatly help to eliminate waste considerably. Composed of volunteers, the “Ocean Conservancy has collected a total of 166,144,420 items in 152 different countries and locations” within the past twenty five years (Sesini 15). This statistic alone exemplifies how much an act, that most would deem inadequate and unhelpful, can dramatically impact the environment. Though not all of the debris will wash up on shore because many of it has sunk to the ocean floor, people can make a considerable impact by routinely participating in local beach
