The Pacific Wars during World War II consisted of the battles of Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Peleliu, Saipan, and Leyte. Okinawa and Peleliu are two of the most recognized battles in the Pacific. They were also some of the biggest battles that the U.S. had ever fought, out of the Pacific region. The battles consisted of much new and deadly technology from both sides. Air, sea, and land were all war features during the battle. There was a total of about 360,000 soldiers fighting in the wars from both sides, and both wars. There were many more deaths to come counting soldier and civilian lives (History).
The first battle of Okinawa and Peleliu was Peleliu. The battle took place on September 15, 1944. It was between the U.S. and Japan and took place on the island itself. There were new tanks, guns, planes, and ships. A new American fighter plane was introduced during the battle, it was known as the F4U. Its wings were bendable, in order for many of them to be able to be stored side by side. The biggest part of the plane was its engine it could develop a max of 2,400 horsepower, many pilots had accidents due to its powerful engine. Famous pilot, Charles Lindbergh, alongside Vought Sikorsky improvised the F4U to the point that they would be able to hold larger bomb loads. Its maximum speed is 570 km per hour. The F4U was first used in the war on September 24, 1944. Also a new Japanese invention was, the “Zero” it was a fighter plane. Its maximum speed was 565 km per hour. The Zero was one of the greatest Japanese fighter planes of World War II. Though the Japanese were very satisfied and proud with the Zero, it wasn’t quite as fast as the F4U.
