Perceptions of Race and Ethnicity Quick History / Define Many ethnic groups experience a form of prejudice, with many minority groups encountering discrimination in their lives. Prejudice is ideas about the characteristics of a group that is applied to all members of that group and unlikely to change regardless of evidence against. Discrimination is the unequal treatment of individuals based on their membership in a social group, usually motivated by prejudice. “Minority is a racial and or ethnic group that is subjected to prejudice and discrimination, aka a negative attitude towards a certain category of people” (Thio 1998) New knowledge that I received Creating groups based off of ethnicity was easy and comfortable, breezily sharing stories between each other with things we have encountered and experienced; finding common themes and situations to which each person within a group could relate.
