In William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies, a group of boys from Britain are left stranded on an unnamed island off of the coast of the Pacific Ocean following a devastating plane crash. Piggy, a main character in the novel, faces numerous issues, such as his terrible eyesight, asthma, being oppressed by the other boys on the island, and not being physically competent of some of the activities done by the other boys on the island because he is physically impaired. Even though he faces many issues, he is the most intelligent person on the island and has other leadership skills also, such as following rules and using a conch shell for unity. Piggy is extraordinarily intelligent for a few main reasons. First of all, Piggy is Ralph’s advisor, and he comes up with a few of Ralph’s astonishing ideas as the leader on the island including meetings and using the conch to call for the meetings. Piggy states, “We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They’ll come when they hear it”(20). Piggy says this because he believes using a conch for calling a meeting is a great idea because it is very loud. Piggy also loves science and uses science in a good bit of the things that he says. Piggy states, “Life, is scientific, that’s what it is”(118). He says this because he believes that everything in the world is scientific. Piggy recognizes from early on that Jack is a savage who is only focused on hunting.
He also mentions how he fears Jack. Therefore, it is obvious that Piggy is the most intelligent boy on the island.
Piggy has a magnificent personality because of his resilience, insightfulness, and several other reasons. The first reason Piggy has a sensational personality is that he follows the rules at all times, even when no one is watching. Piggy says, “What are we? Humans? Or Animals?
