Police Brutality Police brutality is not a new problem to this country, or even this world. This problem has existed for centuries and has recently grown to become a larger part of the global spotlight. Police brutality is a huge problem facing this world, mainly police violence, through acts of physical and mental abuse that may even lead to death. Police brutality is a universal problem that every nation and most communities face on a daily basis, and universal reforms are what are needed to fix it. There are many reasons to not trust the government but, “findings have significant implication that causes of unmet need for mental health services are not limited to proximate health services factors such as costs, stigma, access to, an accessibility of mental health services, even though they have consistently received significant research attention” (Alang et al. 1113). Police brutality also associates with unmet need for healthcare and this leads to the mistrust in the healthcare industry, police department, and government industry as a whole. What has surprised researchers is, “the relative lack of collaboration between healthcare providers and law enforcement especially when it comes to addressing police violence” (Alang et al. 1113). Thesestudies have shown that people who become victims of police violence also tend to form a mistrust in the rest of the government supported agencies in their communities. Police brutality causes not only mental health, and possibly physical health, effects but also a tendency to no longer trust in the police. This solution will only make crime worsen and it will not allow for communities to be protected like they should. Defunding police is a solution that has been brought up a lot recently with the strength of the BLM (Black Lives Matter) movement and the deaths of people like Beonna Taylor and George Floyd. Defunding the police, while it is a solution, is a terrible fix to a terrible problem. Defunding would mean taking money away from what is the only government supported crime stopping organization, and I do not think that people realize all that this takes away besides officers on the streets. This would also make crimes impossible from being investigated and render criminal defense lawyers almost completely useless. Most people look for this quick fix without looking around to see who else this affects besides
