Fairly made or overpaid?
“As of Feb 8, 2023, the average annual pay for a Professional Athlete in the United States is $53,724 a year.”(ZipRecruiter) In the average person’s mind athletes are these rich and popular figures. In reality, although they do make a good salary, they work tirelessly to support their teams. Professional athletes are not overpaid and make an adequate salary because they sacrifice parts of their life and bring in profit for the companies they are associated with.
The Perspective voices that athletes are not overpaid because they sacrifice important moments over their lives, and their lives in general: “ NFL players who experience multiple concussions can suffer from progressive degenerative disease that causes dementia and depression.”(The Perspective) This is significant because athletes are willing to risk a part of their life, personality, and well-being to play the game. They are paid to help these companies make the money they do: “The National Football League, Major League Baseball, and the National Basketball Association generate billions of dollars in revenue. Without the players , the leagues wouldn’t exist. Players’ salaries are simply their share of all the cash these hugely successful businesses bring in.”(Washington Post). Essentially this means players are paid for their help getting major companies, they are associated with, wealthy. Without the athletes, big brands, like the NFL ( National Football League), NBA( National Basketball Association), and MLB ( Major League Baseball), wouldn’t make the profit they do. Fans pay to watch teams they like, buy merchandise for their favorite players, and contribute to funding for these major corporations.
