Scrooge's Change
Is it possible to change the whole attitude someone has about life in one night? In A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, Ebenezer Scrooge, the protagonist, despises Christmas. He does not like to give away his money or spend time with friends or family. On the night of Christmas eve, he is visited by three ghosts that show him his past, present, and future. After the ghost finished their job Scrooge was a changed man. He appreciated his time with people and realized Christmas was more than he thought. In A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens’ the ghosts teach scrooge, his past doesn’t define him, the true meaning of the holidays, and that his present affects the future so that scrooge can have a chance to change for the better.

The ghost of Christmas Past shows Scrooge his young self with a woman who is crying. The woman talks to him about how he loves money more than her. The woman says her final goodbye to Scrooge, after their conversation, then leaves for good. Scrooge starts to yell at his young self telling him to not let her leave but the younger Scrooge can not hear him. Scrooge then begs to leave but the ghost of Christmas Past says “I have told you these were shadows of the things that have been. They are what they are. Do not blame me, Mr. Scrooge.” (Charles Dickens page 16) When the ghost of Christmas Past says “these were shadows of the things that have been”, he is referring to Scrooge's past. He then states “they are what they are '', this means that Scrooge can not change them, they’ve already happened. By Scrooge learning that he can not go back to change the past, he starts to realize he can still change by changing his present self. By Scrooge learning that Christmas is about spending time with family and finding joy in the things that people have. This makes him want to spend more time with the people in his life. He also realizes how much he has compared to others yet is never happy. Lastly, Scrooge learning that his present affects him in the future gives him the final reason to change himself. The way that Scrooge lived most of his life hating Christmas and spending money but changed his ways in one night shows that it is possible to change for the good even if someone might not believe
