Searching for Summer by Joan Aiken, is a tale of a dim-light world, due to the drop of an atomic bomb. People are on the hunt for a glistening of sunlight all through the lands, though none have any luck. People in this world take so many luxuries for granted, and this story peeks into the idea of this. In this futuristic novel, Tom and Lily, which are two newlyweds, that are going on the search to feel the warmth of the sun on their pale faces, run across a man greedy for the sun, then a blind man that has never seen the sun, yet always has the sun. This is an ode to the world and how people do not appreciate what they have until it is gone, and this is an opening into the future, and how it could all end, and how this could be life.

Ms Hatching’s son, is blind. Never even seen the light of day, yet he lives in the one spot where a “dusty golden square of sunshine” lives. Where Tom and Lily come from, the tea is the color of dust, the road is gray and gritty, and all things evoke a depressed and gloom emotion because of the thick cloud that refuses to lift. Look to the land that the Hatchings are on, and it is lively and energetic, blazing geraniums are in bloom, bees murmur, tea cups are crowned in red and gold, and the tea is tawny and sweet.
