Race is divisions of humankind. It’s about dividing all human being into several different groups by color, language, culture, qualities and characteristics. The book Snow Falling On Cedars involves a love triangle revolving around a murder case after World War II. On the other hand, the musical movie South Pacific revolves around a characters on a military base during World War II who developed a relationship. But even though characters in Snow Falling On Cedars and South Pacific share similar struggles in relationships around World War II, because of their character and level of maturity their love did not come to the same end. Yet, characters from both the book and the movie have totally opposite qualities. Hatsue in Snow Falling on Cedars have been taught all her life that she can only marry and date someone who is her own race. Because of difference in the family religion and culture, even though Hatsue still dated Ishmael for a long period of time. She is torned between the wishes of her family and her lover. While she is with Ishmael she always have the feeling that this relationship won’t work till the end. Though Hatsue is pessimistic, Nellie are extremely optimistic about everything. She believes that there will be a peace in the World War II, she believes different race human beings can get along well. Ishmael are the same, he thinks love can solve anything. After many generations, there still are many people out there who refuse to get along with other folks who are different than them. Racism still goes around the world, it’s a question that when it will end. There still might be couple who are separated because of difference in race and religion. Or some are together because of determination or have the courage and understanding of this issue. A relationship not only depends on the individual themselves but, also can against the pressure and influence of their family and this society. It’s about what’s the individual’s belief of right choice to make, and not about what other thinks.
