Soledad brother was written in a unique style. His letters describe his feelings when he was inside and out the prison. Each letter was written from his point of view, therefore the reader is able to connect to his words and situations. Throughout the book there are themes that resonate to the reader the most. My connections to the book were as close I could make them which also made me have an emotional response. Soledad brother was very interesting to me because everything that happened in the story was way before I was born; Today his interpretation of the story is still going on. racism has never ended and continues till this day. In one of the letters, he states that he knows certain black people that are liked but he excludes himself because in the letter he also comments that those who aren't liked are doing something wrong. I related this to racism because in the book he also tells his mother that he would never change, Jackson wants to be his own black self. I was able paint a picture of what prison was like back then especially for someone of color. Its sad, I can't imagine being trapped in a cell for 23 ½ hours a day thinking about what your skin means to others. Soledad described his perception of the “system” in a poetic way. That's when I started feeling this motivational feeling for myself. Soledad brother was in jail, not knowing a release date. Being in jail trapped him physically, but the biggest lesson I got from this book was that indeed he was in jail but mentally he had the world to himself.
