Personal Position
Spiritual discernment is a process that integrates prayer and knowledge of the Bible within decision-making, taking the process of strategic thinking beyond what is rational or political, to the level of the sense of the promptings of the Holy Spirit. Characterized by listening to God and putting situations into biblical context, spiritual discernment is a discipline viewed as a transformative process of divine-human cooperative imagination, while discovering and choosing decisions that lead to actions (Mellon & Kroth, 2013). According to Horton (2009), there are three major approaches to spiritual discernment: the bull’s eye approach, the wisdom approach, and the relationship-formation approach. Individuals who adopt or practice the bull’s eye approach believe that God has a perfect detailed plan for their lives and they are responsible for discovering that plan and following it. The bull’s eye approach is based on the belief that there is a detailed plan for my life—designed by God—that just needs to be found and followed accordingly. Growing up, my career choices were influenced by the various occupations introduced to me at a young age. In 1st grade, my lifelong dream was to become a labor and delivery registered nurse based on my desire to help deliver babies. Impressed at a young age, I believed that becoming a Registered Nurse was my destiny and God’s ultimate plan for my life. Similarly, to the bull’s eye approach my past exposure to a Registered Nurse’s occupation, helped guide my career aspirations, based on the belief that God placed a variety of impressionable Registered Nurses in my life to direct me towards a path in nursing profession.
