Sports by nature are an environment that requires people to push their bodies to extreme limits in order for people to become the best at their individual sport or skill. Though out history athlete have pushed the limits of their bodies to accomplish these tasks, while going to these extremes many have suffered injuries, maiming and in some cases death. Athletes though out the centuries have accepted these risks and as a society we acknowledge risks by stating, “ injuries are part of the game”. My theory is finding different means of achieving athletic success is part of the game as well and if the athlete is staying within the spirit of sport i.e. competing to win against an opponent within the rules of the game, therefore the athlete is not deviant. Athletes that use what every the news or latest way to improve or lengthen the abilities or careers, are no different that the person in society that uses different drugs or techniques to enhance their sex lives, lower their cholesterol, lose weight, stay wake to work longer hours, have more energy for the work day or get up in the morning without feeling pain. Our society believes there is nothing wrong with taking some type of medicine or surgical procedure to enhance someone’s life, so I view it somewhat hypocritical for our society to view athletes to not have the same approach towards their bodies in terms of enhancement or improvement. Deviant behavior for our athletes would be for our athletes to use ethics that is outside the norm in comparison to our society, which would require the athletes not to use enhancements and improvements, due to our society uses enhancements and some cases doctors are prescribing human growth
