The American school system allows high schoolers to take Advanced Placement courses, during their four years of high school. These courses prepare students and give them a head start for college. They also give them free college credits, in addition to an excellent GPA. This means once a student is admitted into a college, they are able to send those credits to the college, and students will start the year with credits already on their transcript. This also gives them the opportunity to graduate earlier. It also lowers a student’s tuition down, because they already have credit. They also have the mindset that the course work is heavy for them to control. Other influences might be the people they surround themselves and associate with. “Supportive peer groups can play a role in students’ decisions to enroll in high level coursework in highschool.” ( Shiu 59) If the principle of the peer group is education, others are willing to follow and stay on track. Teachers and counselors also close doors to a student by not providing them with complete information and benefits with taking these courses. Staff should anticipate enough information to guide their students such as explaining the content of the course and how these courses will help them in the future with a lower tuition in college. Especially the families of first generation students. It gives them a better chance to advocate for their kids.These special people have personal barriers that others might not fully understand. It is a barrier to discrimination. Not having the opportunity to go home and ask their parents about the process to apply for colleges, scholarships, or financial aid. “If the family’s home language is other than English, communication in that language would make it much easier for them to navigate the course selection.”(Sokolenko)
Schools should also invest more in funding. They should provide more resources like textbooks.A school can simply pay for the AP exams.
