The first symbol to represent the thesis is the tractor. The tractor symbolizes death and fear. When Arthur's family gets the tractor from the Luntz farm to make it easier to farm. Arthur's dad tries it first and it ends up killing him. Arthur is bothered by this by this and starting to feel guilty and sad about his death that he can't forget about how his father died. “ Whenever Arthur thought of it he saw the giant wheels clawing the air,saw his father’s face-purple eyes bulging out.”(pg 230) This quote shows that how he well always remember the gruesome death of his father and how much of an impact it will have on him. When Arthur's fathers dies he spent most of the time grieving there while doing work.Arthur would also be stressed out about the fact that he had to take care of two farms and how he couldn't do it alone.“Keeping pace with grief. He ached with grief, felt sick with worry. Once he said aloud , startling himself and the horses, “ What am I goin ’ to do, Dad?””(pg 231) This shows how Arthur is lost without his dad and how all the work is left on him to do. This shows how emotional Arthur is and how he is facing his father's death by having to be doing more work. In the novel Arthur uses the farm to grieve over the deaths of the people who he lost. He does this by chopping down many trees to get all his anger out. This is because he is tried of seeing everyone he loved dying and seeing Ted the way he is now. “He was sick with himself.
