Let’s face it, tattoos and piercings have burst into mainstream American culture. Tattoos and piercings have become a well established art form over the last couple decades, evolving from being a sign of rebellion to being a glamorous form of self-expression especially with adolescents. The fact that tattoos and piercings have become more popular and trendy, can influence and put pressure on our youth to be accepted in society. For some, tattoos are a personal choice, while others may feel pressured into it. In the article “On Teenagers and Tattoos,” author Andre Martin explores the psychology behind teenagers’ reasons for getting a tattoo and why others should not judge an adolescents character by his/her tattoos, however getting a tattoo is a choice to consider very carefully. There are many reasons why people get these pieces of permanent body art and it is primarily due to their alluring nature.
Even though getting tattoos can be thought of as a way to express oneself, they can also be viewed as a fight for our youth’s sense of identity.
