Markus Zusak, the author of The Book Thief, was born in Sydney, Australia on June 23, 1975. He graduated from the University of South Wales with a Bachelor of Arts and a Diploma of Education. His mother, Lisa, is from Germany and his father, Helmut, is from Austria. His parents told him about their childhoods in Germany and Austria during the events of World War II. One of the stories his mother told him was about watching a group of Jews walk down the street on their way to the concentration camp. In the group, there was an old man who was struggling to keep up with the group, so a boy ran up to the old man and offered him bread. The German officers took the bread away from the old man and whipped the boy. This story was a basis for when Liesel’s father, Hans Huberman, offered an old man food and was whipped. I chose this book for my book review because I had heard good thing about it from so many people. Since I read a lot, I have a reading wish list and this book has been on it for a while. To be honest, before I read the book I had some doubts, but since it was on the list I decided I would read it. In 1938, Liesel Meminger, is on a train with her mother and her little brother. Somewhere during the train ride her brother dies. Since her mother was a communist, Liesel has to live with Hans and Rosa Huberman. She becomes friends with Rudy Steiner. Liesel was struggling in school because she couldn’t read. One night when her father, Hans Huberman, was comforting her from her nightmare he found a book that she stole. Eventually he taught her how to read. There was a bonfire where books were burned and Liesel stole a book from the stack of books. While she did this the mayor's wife saw her.
