What caused the Civil War to become the bloodiest war of the history of America? Slavery was the cause of the Civil War. It is the caused the North to be jealous of the South’s wealth because the South didn’t have to pay their slaves to work while the North had to pay their employers, but they also did believe that slavery was morally wrong. On the other hand, the South depended on slavery for their entire economy and their income. The tension between the North and South made the country grow apart because of the issue of slavery. When the Fugitive Slave Act was passed, the South was more than happy, but the North was a different story. The northerners were furious and disagreed with this act and openly showed that they didn’t like this act. They would help slaves escape from their slaves in public. Another factor would be when Harriet Beecher Stowe published her book called Uncle Tom’s Cabin. This book sold over 100,000 copies all over the North in the first week. This book was popular very quickly, and it also spread to Europe. The book showed the truth and the horrors of slavery, so this made the southerners extremely angry. The Dred Scott Decision also contributed to making the North and the South to move closer to conflict. After the decision was made, the North despised the South even more because this means that the South’s territory of slavery was expanding. John Brown’s raid also played a part in causing arguments between the North and the South. John Brown believed that he was an angel sent down from God to resolve this slavery issue. This raid made was a failure and made John Brown look like either a terrorist or a freedom fighter, but in the end, the South found him as a domestic terrorist and enraged by this attempt at rebellion.
