The civil rights movement and American literature
The civil rights movement changed American literacy a lot. During the civil rights movement people used their words as a weapon against society.
Before the Civil Rights movement there was the Harlem Renaissance. This event set up a platform for the civil rights movement to stand on. The harlem renaissance took place around 1920s to the 1930s or so. This was like the civil rights movement but more for artists rather than authors. However authors still joined in. This included Musicians, Painters and Scholars. As i said before Authors were still included but this was more about everyone all joining together and sharing their struggles through art. This was very important because they were not only allowed to display their thoughts but also their talents.
The civil rights movement took place around the 1950s to the late 1960s. This was a very important time in American history. Americans were starting to seek the same rights as others and wanted to get rid of segregation. So of course this was a perfect time for authors to express their opinion and share their own experiences. Many african americans

There were many different kinds of writings used. Poetry and biographies were the most popular along with stories and plays such as “Raisin in the sun”. Other authors such as Ralph ellison wrote a book called the invisible man. This book also stressed the issue of equality. Langston Hughes also jumped aboard the civil rights movement and told his own struggles of being an African American man during this time. He addressed the present along with the past. Most of his poetry was very inspirational. One of my personal favorites is “let america be america again.” in this poem he talks about his own struggles and other problems people would have faced. He describes how free america was supposed to be but how some people never received this
