Authority and The Individual High standing figures of authority, through their oppressive nature, will attempt to manipulate society and its ethics, to either improve it or to benefit themselves, resulting in the rising of individuals rebelling against the control of authority and supporters for their ideas. Authority’s lasting conflict against the nonconforming individual is portrayed in the film The Dead Poet’s Society by Peter Weir, the film illustrates a strong and rigid authoritarian body of Welton academy, and their arising struggle with new means of teaching and revolting individuals. The authority’s selection of rebelling individuals in the film The Dead Poet’s Society is shown in the scene where Mr Nolan is calling for the members of the ‘Dead Poet’s Society’ to his office, a close-up of Todd Anderson’s face shows his petrified facial expressions, this portrays the individual’s fear of punishment after being defeated by the authority’s powerful position. Todd’s fear of those in power later turns into blind obedience of the authority, and the expulsion of the authoritarian individual that influenced their freedom of expression. Mutinous individuals step down from freedom into the influence of the authority, when intimidated by the authority’s strong stature. Likewise, the power and authority of a lone robot is enough to intimidate the individual’s cooperation, illustrated in The Pedestrian. The line "Your hands up! Or we 'll Shoot!" threatens Mr Mead’s life in order to gain their obedience, this line is exerted by the author to compare the robotic police officer to a human officer as both say similar words, “Put your hands up”. When Mr Mead asks “Where are you taking me?”, the machine replies, “To the Psychiatric Centre for Research on Regressive Tendencies”, the precise response of the machine implies that it was ordered to take individuals like Mr Mead for
