Sandra Cisneros once said, “My feminism is humanism, with the weakest being those who I represent, and that includes many beings and life forms, including some men.” Sandra Cisneros is the author of The House on Mango Street and is an outspoken feminist in our society. In this novel, Cisneros uses the neighborhood women to depict the feminist theory. “Feminist theory is a major branch within sociology that is distinctive for how it’s creators shift their analytic lens, assumptions, and topical focus away the male viewpoint and experience”(Crossman). In layman's terms feminism brings attention to things that are overlooked due to men being in charge of society. Rafaela, Sally, and Minerva are three women in the neighborhood who are controlled by a male power in their life and showcase how easy it is for men to control women in this society. She uses Rafaela’s, Sally’s, and Minerva’s stories to reveal how in society men can get away with completely controlling women because it has become a normality. It is considered normal to keep your ‘woman’ in her place. All these examples are situations that are so easily overlooked by everyone because of the fact that they have become normal. Being the feminist that she is, Sandra Cisneros had to bring to light these situations to make aware that women are oppressed in many ways but since our society is run by men, no ones wants to point it out.
