1. The movie Gattaca is based on a man named Vincent Anton who lived in a fictional future in which the genetic pedigree of individuals determined their place in society. Vincent’s parents had him genetically screened for illnesses when he was only a zygote, but his parents decided that they wanted a son from God, one whose genome had not been manipulated. This decision haunted Vincent’s life from the very beginning. When he was born, the nurses asked what the name of the child would be. His mother wanted her son’s name to be Anton, the name of her husband and his biological father. His father yelled through the window that the baby’s name would be Vincent Anton, a symbol that would always mean Vincent was second best and was not good enough to bear his father’s name. Vincent’s brother, Anton, was one of the detectives working on the case. Anton was convinced that his older brother had committed the crime, but they swam out into the ocean at night to see who would turn back first. This was something they had done as children to prove who was better. Vincent had only ever beat Anton once, and was determined to do so again. When Anton could no longer keep up with Vincent, he asked Vincent how he did it. Vincent intensely replied by saying that he had never saved anything for the swim back, which was indicative of his mentality throughout the movie. The detectives caught the murderer, and Vincent traveled into space like he had always dreamt of doing. After Vincent was screened for the last time before he went into the spaceship, the man who had always conducted Vincent’s screening revealed a secret. The man had always known Vincent was a degenerate, but allowed Vincent to work towards his dream because the man’s child was also a degenerate.
