Larger Occasion
In 2007, 28 percent of Baltimore’s children lived in poverty. Both the author’s mother and the other Wes Moore’s mother struggled to provide for their children. Both took extra jobs in the hopes of providing their children with a better life.
59 percent of African American households in Maryland in 2009 consist of only one parent. Both the author and the other Wes grew up without a father figure.

The prevalence of drugs in Baltimore provided a reason Tony and Wes became a part of the drug game at such a young age.
234 murders in 2008 and 238 in 2009 in Baltimore. Wes, charged with attempted murder and later, murder, serves a sentence of life in prison. Violence remained common in Baltimore city at this time.
Immediate Occasion
At age three, the author sees his father die.
The other Wes starts selling drugs.
The author begins to skip school, letting his grades slide. Eventually, the school places him on academic and disciplinary probation.
The author attends military school. Although he does not want to go at first, the experience changes his life.
The other Wes participates in a robbery and the murder of a man. He gets sentenced to a life in prison.

Working with troubled teens caused his interest in the other Wes Moore’s story. His desire to help kids make the right decisions relates to when his family forced him to attend military school which turned his life around.
Completed an MLitt in International Relations. The study of literature caused him to begin his own writing career.
Worked as a White House fellow in the State Department. Reflects his earlier work in politics on his internship with Mayor Schmoke.
Worked on the Afghan Reconciliation Program which brings together former insurgents and the new government. Moore utilized his military experience and knowledge of international relations to help Afghanistan recover.
Served on the Board of Directors for the Iraq Afghanistan Veterans of America. Used his military experience to voice concerns about veterans, living as one himself.
