Essay On The Path To Becoming A Board Certified OB/GYN

The path to becoming a board certified OB/GYN is long and rigorous, however, I am up for the challenge. Many ask me the common question “why spend 6 years until you can make money?” and common phrases like “You know once you're in you can’t get out”, and I agree. See, the main reason why I have chosen this path is because ever since I was 5, I have been closely linked with this career and the field fascinates me. You might say that 5 is a very young age to even know what this field is, let alone an OB, but I remember this scarcely from times when my mom was pregnant with my sister. She would take me to her appointments and the office ladies would treat me as they would any kid. They also showed me the ultrasounds and that I had a sister on the way. Growing up, trips to the OB became more frequent, as my mom had health related issues and I ended up being diagnosed with PCOS. I want to be able to help women, especially brown women who have to deal with the stigma and consequences that we already were dealing with prior (like excess facial hair being more prominent with pcos, etc.). This career, as it is one of the most fulfilling careers in the medical field will keep me inspired to better, push through the hardships/times, and will help me as I help others. I don’t think there is any other career that could offer this much stability, higher than average pay, and flexibility. However, if all else fails there are additional options similar/related to this career that I can take interest in. For example, midwives and labour/delivery nurses come with the same background/knowledge as an OB/GYN and expertise in the same field. If I am unable to obtain what I want, I will consider these paths as they work in the same field with different
