During the late 1800s and early 1900s many problems were present in America's society. During the Progressive Era many people found ways to address these problems and help find a solution. Some of the most famous people who changed or societys problem during this time are Upton Sinclair (muckraker), Jacob Riis (muckraker), Nellie Bly (muckraker), and Susan B. Anthony (fought for women’s rights). Though these people had important roles in changing America’s society. Not everything could be changed by one person. Civil rights movements including women’s suffrage movement and child labor protests changed America’s society during this time period. Civil rights, child labor, and equality were all problems in America. During this time women did not have the same rights as men, they didn't have the right to vote and couldn't have jobs of men. Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Lucy Stone fought for women's rights. Susan B. Anthony argued that in the constitution it says, “we the people,” but it really means we the white males. She doesn't just fight for women thought she argued that other races aren't equal along with women. After WWI women gained the right to vote by doing the men’s jobs while they were away during the war. Though equality wasn't the only problem relating to people's rights, child labor was also a major problem during this time period. Child labor has been in America since the beginning of industrialization. During the 1890’s child labor was almost common. 18.1 percent of children worked. Businesses used children to make more money because they were paid less and could do some jobs adults couldn't. Federal laws were placed in between 1918 and 1922 to ban the use of children in factories, through reform movements and
