Virginia Liu Greene - 4 Pre-AP English I 25 October 2015 The Secret “Russian” Police of Animal Farm Those in power become corrupt, but without the force that drives fear into the people, they could not have achieved such power. Both the dogs and the Secret Russian Police were the fearsome force that assisted their leaders in their thirst to be omnipotent. They would intentionally strike fear into the citizens with their terrifying strength. Even though the citizens wanted to oppose and rebel against the leaders, they often meet an unfortunate end. The KGB was involved in many external affairs and became infamous due to the tasks that were given to them. The main responsibilities and duties of the KGB consisted of “foreign and domestic espionage, intelligence gathering and analysis, counterintelligence, political control over the population, protecting borders, and covert activities and disinformation” (“KGB” 1). They were able to carry out all their responsibilities and duties and were almost everywhere as spies for Stalin. They would be in foreign allies’ and enemies’ territories blending in and gathering political and military information. The NKVD focused on the internal affairs and helped Stalin by exiling or executing anyone who was perceived as a threat. They were an “instrument of terror as Joseph Stalin used it to promote his political and social objectives” (“NKVD” 1). Since the formidable NKVD was the main source of fear to the people, Stalin believed that they would be helpful in getting rid of his political and social opponents, such as Leon Trotsky. It would be easier for Stalin to push everyone out of the way when climbing the political field ladder.
