The verdict of the Tom Robinson case helps shine the light on the morality of the Maycomb community members. The Ewell family are seated on the lowest level of the society statues pyramid and rightly so. Bob Ewell punishes Mayella, his daughter, in a violent manner and blames Tom Robinson for raping her; this is an unethical and dirty accusation. “We don’t know, but there is circumstantial evidence to indicate that Mayella Ewell was beaten savagely by someone who led almost exclusively with his left. We do know in part what Mr. Ewell did:”(Lee 272).
In the year of 1935 a man was put on trial for a crime he never could have committed, but a lawyer named Atticus fighter to save his life by using his powers in the courtroom. This case was about the rape of Mayella Ewell by an African American man in a small southern town of Maycomb, Alabama. Atticus Finch, one of the town’s best lawyers has an insurmountable task ahead of him when he takes on the case of defending Tom from an extremely biased jury. In his arguments he uses persuasion techniques such as Ethos, Logos and Pathos to convince the jury of Tom’s apparent innocence.
Tom Robinson Found Guilty Last weekend, despite his lawyer’s attempts, Tom Robinson was found guilty of taking advantage of Mayella Ewell. Robinson was accused by Robert Ewell of raping and beating his daughter Mayella Ewell. Robinson is a Negro and lives by the town dump with his wife and children. The witnesses called to the stand were Heck Tate, the county sheriff, and Bob and Mayella Ewell.
In the book, “To Kill a Mockingbird”, by Harper Lee, Tom Robinson has been accused of raping Mayella Ewell. He is well known for being a Christian man, but Mr. Ewell claims he saw him raping his daughter. I believe Tom Robinson is innocent because of the Ewell family history, lack of evidence, and he has a disability that causes a problem with the testimony. The Ewell family is nowhere near perfect. Mr. Bob Ewell is known for his violent actions and words.
Tom Robinson was put on trial on August 26th, 1935 for the raping of Mayella Violet Ewell and was found guilty not much longer after that. The crime, November 21st, 1934, has two different views- the Ewell’s and then Tom’s. I, Jem Atticus Finch, believe Tom Robinson is not guilty for numerous reasons. My dad, Atticus Finch was the defendant of Tom Robinson and I too wish to defend him. I’m a twelve year old boy living in Maycomb County with my Aunt, father, and sister.
Tom Robinson’s case was a case about racial discrimination in the south and how it affected Tom Robinson, a man who was falsely accused of raping a white woman named Mayella Ewell by Bob Ewell, a well known person who was revered as a failure and disgrace to society because of his family’s actions. The process in which he was falsely accused occurred because the people of Maycomb County were racist including the mostly white jury. Despite the evidence that proved him innocent he was still sent to jail simply because he was African American. After that he tried to escape from prison by climbing over the fence, Tom who is unable to use his arm was shot 17 times by the guards when one or two shots would’ve been enough , unfortunately this was
Bob Ewell entered the office excited saying Heck needed to get out to the Ewells house quick, because some black person raped his daughter. Mr. Tate then drove to the Ewells estate and found Mayella Ewell lying in the middle of the floor in the front room beat up. Heck then helped Mayella up and asked her who had beat her up. Mayella told Sheriff Heck Tate that it was Tom Robinson who beat her up. Then Mr. Tate asked if Tom had taken advantage of her
The eighth amendment is related to the To Kill A Mockingbird story because they wanted to give Tom Robinson the death penalty for something he didn't do. He was accused of rape, but they didn't give him a fair trial. So it was cruel and unusual punishment and false testament in this situation. Black people would get death penalties or life in prison if they committed a crime.
Mr. Ewell behaves immaturely when Atticus declared to the jury that he is left-handed. He immediately “turned angrily to the judge and said he didn't understand what his being left-handed had anything to do with it”(237). Bob conveys the impression of maliciousness as if he was trying to distract the jury from believing Atticus. He agrees with his left-handedness, but misinterprets when Mr.Gilmer asked him if he was “ambidextrous”(238) and unknowingly answered the question he could use”one hand as good as the other”(238). This, to a certain extent, created possibilities of Mr. Ewell to prove guilty.
In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the story is set in the 1900’s, Maycomb, Alabama. During this time there was racism in the south and segregation which separated the whites and blacks from everything. There was also the Great Depression, the whole country was poor and people living in the country had to trade and do other jobs for people to either pay them off or to buy something from them. The trial in this book is about Mayella and Bob Ewell, two white people, claiming and arguing that Tom Robinson, a black person, raped Mayella Ewell. This trial is really important because at that time in the south, white people took advantage of black people and their kindness and thought they would take that or shut up just because they were black.
