Tom’s character in the book, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald has many different factors that comprise his personality and the way he lives. The book gives plenty of examples to help the reader see what kind of person Tom Buchanan is. Tom Buchanan is a very wealthy man who lives in East Egg and is married to Daisy. Wealth is the main reason numerous people lose who they are. This is seen throughout the book with Tom Buchanan, and the power he gains from his wealth causes him to be unsympathetic towards people, immoral in his actions, hypocritical with others, and careless in every situation. Throughout the book, there are multiple mentions of how Tom symbolizes the world of the very rich. One great example of his wealth is when “they spent a year in France for no particular reason” (Fitzgerald 6). Lying, cheating, and a plentiful amount of other things are what Tom does on a daily bases but when other people do them he judges them. He tells Myrtle that he cannot divorce Daisy because of her religion but this is a lie (Fitzgerald 33). Daisy is not catholic he lies to Myrtle so he can get out of divorcing Daisy. Throughout the book, Tom cheats on Daisy he even cheats on Daisy right after their honeymoon (Lehan “Civilization…” 88). He also judges people for things he does such as when he thinks Mr.Wilson is so dumb because he does not see how unfaithful his wife is while he does not see Daisy stepping out on him for five years. (Fitzgerald 26). Tom gets frustrated and fears he may lose Daisy so he exposes Gatsby’s secret on how he gets his money and ruins any chance of Gatsby getting Daisy (Lehan “Careless Driving…” 101).
