SXU – 1003 – Understanding Society In what way can ‘traditional family’ be viewed as a myth

Evidently, as decades have advanced, changing societies in and around the World have had impacts on the way we perceive the dynamics of family social life. Over the last couple of centuries, the overall impact on has lead us into thinking that significant changes could be due to the Global influences such as the World Wars, a changing demographic picture and the Industrial Revolution that driven us to the way we live not just in the UK, but also around the World.
However, looking back from present times, it is often considered that our views on society has changed to the many based on our opinions on how we operate as a family. The World used to be a much different World back 200 years ago. The common theme in social interaction back in the day could be best described as that ‘each family tended to have, and neighbourhoods knew and worked amongst each other’ but as generations have gone by, social interaction amongst families and friends is far more accessible thanks to modernisation. The structural aspect of a family is that since laws and rights have come into fruition, it has led to an increase in couples having civil marriages and partnerships. Currently, the frequency of partners who are gay and lesbian has also increased and has therefore wilted of what was once recognised a ‘traditional family’.
