A transition is the process or a period of changing from one state or condition to another.
Transitions occur over time, challenging an individual’s attitudes and beliefs. Such transitions can affect an individual in their past present and future. Transitions will always challenge a person’s attitudes and understandings of the world. Transitions may occur in the physical or emotional form and may evoke the individual to dig deep into the meaning of change. The novel ‘The Story Of Tom Brennan’ by J.C. Burk along with the film ‘Warm Bodies’ by Jonathan Levine address the concept of transitions and their challenges as each protagonist undergoes a significant journey.

The continued use of imagery in “the tunnel of darkness” as well as the “grubby, shit-coloured walls” describing his cave shows the reluctance of Tom to involve himself in his new community and move on from the accident. "These days my energy was zapped. All I felt like doing was slobbing around and being left alone" are key aspects to Tom's physical feelings. The emotive language demonstrates Tom’s weariness, now that he has transformed from his days on the football field to this point. “It was the most fun that I have had in ages" we see toms transformation occur on the football field this motif of rugby is the catalyst for change as it allows tom to recreate his social and physical life. “The Hope in Dad's voice crushed me every time" in this quote Burke uses a metaphor, as well as, imagery to show that Tom's attitude towards his favourite hobby football are altered due to his brother's situation. Tom longing to go back into the past, clouds his judgement and transition into the future, hence challenging his attitudes and beliefs as he moves
