Volleyball was invented by William G. Morgan in Holyoke, Massachusetts. William G. Morgan was the born in Lockport, NY on January 23, 1870 to George Henry Morgan and Nancy Chatfield. He was the oldest of his siblings. He graduated high school at Northfield Mount Hermon School and then moved on to attend the YMCA International Training School which was later renamed Springfield College. In the summer of 1895, Morgan moved to Holyoke where he continued to work for the YMCA and became the director of Physical Education.

In 1895, Morgan invented a game called “mitonette’. This was designed to be a combination of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball. He figured that the game would be played with a net that was six foot, six inches high and two feet wide 127 feet long. Americans tended to be a lot shorter around the 19th century so the size of the net would have to accommodate their height. The net would be in the middle and would divide the playing area into two separate parts. The court would be 30 feet by 60 feet so that it could be played in gyms across the nation. Reece was born on January 6, 1970. She was born in La Jolla California, but her parents, Terry Glynn and Robert Eduardo Reece, raised her in Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. When she was in eleventh grade, she moved back to the mainland of the United States and attended Keswick Christian School in ST. Petersburg, FL. This is where Reece found her love for volleyball.
