Sometimes all a human being looks for in this miserable world is purpose. I can only imagine the pain a parent can experience over the loss of a child. In the novel "Where it Hurts" by Reed Farrel Coleman, we come to realize what pain can do to a simple man. As a police officer Gus's role is to protect but when he loses his son, his life begins to fall apart. Even though John jr's death wasn't a cruel murder, Gus takes it as if life had murdered his son. He wanted to blame someone for his death and quickly blamed himself for it. Pain is a deadly weapon that destroys the lives of many and devours the weakest ones until they self-destruct. Gus lost his sense of purpose after the death of his son and begins to take a toll on his life. However, a miraculous life-line comes Gus' way as he gets what he was desperately searching for. When Tommy Delcamino pays him a visit in search for justice for his son's cruel murder Gus questions his morals. He doesn't know whether to help Delcamino out or to completely forget about their encounter. But at the end of the day Gus slowly but surely gets involved and soon after finds himself living a new purpose. Getting involved in this investigation served Gus as a coping mechanism, it helped him face the reality of his son's death and was finally able to deal with it. Even though he wasn't able to get his family back, Gus learns to live at peace with himself. Sometimes life is going to hit us with some pretty heavy situations but all that matters is that we learn from them and not destroy our lives throughout the process. Pain can either make us or break us therefore it's important to learn how to deal with it in order to continue living a healthy life. Just as Gus took that pain that was destroying him, he wasn't too late to turn it around and make something good out of that heart aching
