The idea of paying college athletes has been an ongoing debate since the rise in college sports popularity. With a “total revenue of nearly $1 billion during its 2014 fiscal year”, there is now a clamoring for compensating student-athletes beyond that of an athletic scholarship. This essay takes a point/counterpoint approach to the topic of paying student athletes pointing out both the positive and negative consequences for college administrators, athletes, and coaches. College athletes are considered to be some of the most fortunate students in the world. Most of them attend college on a full ride scholarship that covers all the costs for school; additionally, they get the opportunity to make a reputation for themselves nationwide and prepare for the next level. However, there are a lot of issues regarding how college athletes are treated. The main issue is if college athletes deserve pay or incentives for the work they provide on the field.
