College athletes are not getting paid and many of them are struggling to pay for college. College athletes should be paid because they make the colleges millions of dollars while lots of college athletes struggle financially to get through college which forces them to turn to illegal payments.

Many college athletes have lots of financial problems which force them to turn to illegal payments. ¨One athlete, former Northwestern running back Dennis Lundy, went so far as to fumble the football intentionally near the goal line during a close game with Iowa in 1994 in order to save his bet.¨(Porto). Athletes bet to earn extra money, which can sometimes cost the game. Since the athlete wanted extra money he turned to bet. ¨ College sports like men's football and basketball generate billions of dollars every year for schools, coaches, television networks, apparel companies, and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)¨ (McCormack). Athletes make these schools billions of dollars and get barely anything in return. Athletes do all the hard work. They make the colleges billions of dollars. They don't even get any of it, even though none of it would have been possible without them. ¨ These young players devote more than forty hours a week to practice¨ (McCormack). The players are constantly risking their health and safety, and even working more than the average American. Athletes are constantly putting their health at risk.
