In The Death of the Salesman by Arthur Miller, Willy Loman is a old salesman, once he was very successful but now he suffered from some mental illness. He expected his two sons will be successful as him by being well liked. Biff, one of his son, wanted to meet Willy’s expectation to be a successful salesman but he failed, because he will steal things and he is very immature, his dream was have a farm in the West. At the end of the play, Biff told Willy that he loves him and worried about him, but he will leave the house to find a job and never come back. Willy was very surprised and happy that Biff loves him, so he decided that he want to give Biff his insurance money that he can have a head start by ending his life in the car crash. When Howard fired him, he is very angry and he said to Howard that he gave his name when he is young. After Charley heard what happened to Willy, he said to him, “The only thing you got in this world is what you can sell. And the funny thing is that you’re a salesman, and you don’t know that.”(Death of a Salesman 97). Charley, Willy’s only friend, tells Willy that Howard won’t buy his word and he will provide him a job, because of Willy’s pride, he refused it. When Willy can’t get the success, he thinks his son, Biff, can be the successful salesman like him or better than him. But Biff’s dream is to get a little place in the West, it is not what Willy want him to be. Biff said to Willy “Listen, will you let me out of it, will you just let me out of it!” (Death of the Salesman 109). Throughout the play, Willy’s mind is full of getting success and he don’t want to change. Willy truly believe that being well-liked can get success, but in reality he is not getting what he wanted. He can’t provide his family’s need so he turn to, his only friend, Charley to borrow money. Charley tells Willy that he can work for him, but Willy’s pride won’t let him do it. Also Willy likes to brag about how successful himself and his son is. When he heard Bernard is working in a Supreme Court cases, he concerning Bernard, “The Supreme Court! And he didn’t even mention it!” (Death of a Salesman 84). And Charley respond, “He don’t have to-he’s gonna do it.” (Death of a Salesman 84). That shows Bernard didn’t brag about his job and show respect to Willy. That tells Willy you don’t have to be well-liked can be successful. At the end of the play, Willy finally founds out that Biff is loves him, concerned about him. When he finally want to do something for his family, he choose to ended his life in his car so he can get the money for Biff. Unfortunately, the insurance company won’t give the money because Willy is died by suicide. Biff said in front of Willy’s grave, “He had the wrong dreams. All, all, wrong.”(Death of a Salesman 138).
