Repercussions of being an Outliers
In 2016 there was a total amount of 551 undergraduate Black and female identifying people who attended UC Berkeley. That is 1.9% of the campus were black women. Although this is disheartening statistic it is not surprising simply because high schools, in particular low-income, often do not prepare black students for college. This means many black students do not even fulfil the basic requirements that makes them eligible to apply or even if they make it to college they are not equipped to achieve academically. On every test section, moving up an income category was associated with an average score boost of over 12 points”. In other words, the amount of money one family has is a direct correlation to how well one is going to preform of the SAT. The better they perform the higher the chances of getting into a prestigious college or university. The majority of Black people fit into the lower/ working class therefore their chances of doing well on the SAT is slim to none. This is inequitable because the SAT scores are just a reflection of how much resources someone has. This just perpetuates the social stigmas because black people are not preforming well and as a result, are not being accepted into prestigious college. This is why there is only a 2.8 percent black population here on campus and only 551 black women undergraduates located a here on the campus of UC Berkeley. The fact of the matter is that the black women here at UC Berkeley are outliers not the norm. I believe that perceiving them as outliers is essential because the truth of the matter is that most black women or people for that matter are at precious universities or in colleges. All five of the women that participated explained to what extent being outliers had on them personally and
