College athletes have been robbed of a salary for years from the National College Athletic Association (NCAA), the NCAA sees athletes as amateurs and because of this does not see a reason to pay them. This topic has been heavily debated over the past decade but has picked up steam after the media exposed how much the athletes are making for their schools. I believe athletes should be paid because of how much money they bring into their university. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) was founded in 1906, expanded to Division I, II, and III in 1973, and then expanded to include women’s sports in 1982. The NCAA is a non-profit organization which watches over 450,000 athletes in over 1,000 different conferences (The NCAA). In 2014, the NCAA made a record high 989 million dollars in revenue, being just shy of 1 billion, which is among the highest for a major sport company (The NCAA). The conversation about whether college athletes should be paid has gained national attention as it has exposed how much athletes make for their universities and how these athletes have been robbed of a true college education. Unfortunately for these students, they are not getting their complete education along with being robbed of a salary from the NCAA. A college education is highly valuable; it sets up even the most highly touted athletes up for success if their plan to go to the NFL or NBA is derailed by injury or behavior. An education will put them on an equal playing field with their peers when applying for jobs. But because of the NCAA and their view of athletes as just a source of income, schools throw athletes in easy majors that do not have much relevance in the real world and thus when something goes wrong it drastically hurts their career prospects.
